What is an allergology?

Allergology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases. They are originated by malfunction of the immune system, which responds inadequately to environmental factors. Incorrect intensity of an immune response to common substances found in the human environment (the so-called allergens such as pollen, animal skin, mites, fungi) is for those suffering from allergies, pathologically increased. Generally, the allergenic factor itself (allergen) is not toxic to healthy individuals. Patients suffering from allergic diseases most frequently report to the following symptoms of their disease:

  • Runny nose
  • Urticaria (Hives)
  • Short or wheezing breath
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the lips, the eyelids, and the face
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Conjunctivitis

Extremely severe allergic reactions can lead to the life-threatening condition of the patient which is, for example anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis can be accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Urticaria (Hives) (90% of patients)
  • Redness of the skin (50% patients)
  • Swelling of the upper respiratory tract, rhinitis (50 – 60% of patients)
  • Coughing, wheezing, shortened of breath (50% of patients)
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain (30% of patients)
  • Disorders or loss of consciousness, a feeling of being in danger
  • Decreased blood pressure
