What is hepatology?

Hepatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. Patients usually visit the hepatologist’s office because of:

  • abdominal pain (colic)
  • nausea and vomiting
  • heartburn
  • discomfort in the upper abdomen
  • jaundice
  • ascites
